| The Beta Year in Review: 2007-2008 For JCU's newest fraternity, 2007-2008 was quite the year to celebrate for the Colony of Beta Theta Pi. Some highlights: The colony can trace its first presence on campus to October 1, when a team of four Betas from the Administrative Office in Oxford, OH began the recruitment process.- Brother Niro won the title of "Mr. University" on October 15.
- The first class of Betas was inducted on October 25.
- The Betas surprised the ladies of Kappa Kappa Gamma by serenading them at their annual Christmas party.
- Under the auspices of our leadership consultant from the A/O, these men went through an extensive colony education process in November and early December, culminating in Initiation at the home of Beta Theta Pi, in Oxford, OH at Miami University, on January 13.
- During its first semester on campus, Beta managed to earn the highest GPA of any Greek organization.
- Five brothers and five advisors attended the 87th annual Cleveland Beta Theta Pi Alumni Association "New Year" Luncheon on January 25.
- Advisors successfully put on a resume development workshop on January 26 so that the brothers could learn how to create a resume or have their existing one critiqued by a professional from the JCU Career Center.
- Beta Theta Pi co-sponsored Karaoke Night with SUPB on February 1.
- The Colony sent eight of its officers to the Keystone Regional Leadership Conference in New Jersey February 8-10.
- Betas volunteered at the American Red Cross Blood Drive for more than 12 hours on February 12.
- Beta added two more gentlemen as members of the Alpha Class in the spring.
- The brothers struck again on March 8, surprising the ladies of Kappa Delta with a serenade at a joint home-cooked dinner hosted by KD.
- Five of our men were inducted into Order of Omega, a Greek leadership honorary society, on March 12.
- The social committee arranged a St. Patrick's Day themed mixer with the ladies of Gamma Phi Beta in March.
- The brothers hosted a "Mothers' Tea" on March 30, including a private Mass followed by refreshments, where the sons serenaded their mothers.
- Contributing service to the JCU community, the brothers volunteered as assistants and guides for the Class of 2012 Celebration on April 5.
- Beta Theta Pi won the coveted 2008 Greek Week Lip Sync competition and took second place amongst the fraternities for the week.
- Beta's own Patrick Carpenter was crowned as the 2008 "Greek God."
- Vice President Ryan Schoonmaker was recognized as Greek Week 2008's "Most Honorable Man," a brand new award.
- Team Beta Theta Pi raised more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. Additionally, Brother Schoonmaker walked all 18 hours of the event.
To round out the year, Betas performed some landscaping and clean-up at St. Francis Elementary School on May 3. The Colony also donated a new portable basketball hoop to the school.- In its year-end special, The Carroll News declared Beta Theta Pi Fraternity as an "influence" at JCU, the only student organization given such an honor.
- Brother Carpenter was announced as this year's Beaudry Award recipient. The Beaudry Award recognizes outstanding service in leadership, academic achievement, commitment to Christian values, and service to the University and/or greater community, and is arguably the highest honor bestowed on a graduating senior.
- Beta continued its reign as the highest cumulative GPA of all Greek organizations on campus for the second straight semester.
- Taking advantage of many of the summer leadership opportunities that Beta Theta Pi makes available, the Colony sent seven brothers to the Wooden Institute, two brothers to the Leadership College, and one brother to UIFI. President Christopher DiNapoli represented the colony as its delegate to the General Convention, held in Dallas, TX.
- The John Carroll Colony was presented with the Charles Henry Hardin Leadership Development Award at the General Convention on August 8. The award is given to chapters or colonies which best exemplify their commitment to participation in leadership experiences, expounding upon the leadership displayed by Founder Hardin.
