Colony Officers Energized by Keystone 2009
JCU also takes home two regional awards
Sunday, February 8, 2009

VALLEY FORGE, PA -- Eight of the colony's officers and two advisors attended this weekend's Keystone Regional Leadership Conference held at the Radisson Valley Forge. Keystone is a high quality, regional education experience focused on chapter/colony officer development, principled leadership, and volunteer training. JCU officers attended large group sessions and individual officer tracks, learned how to lead the colony, and set goals for the year with the executive team. Three primary goals for the year include fulfilling chartering requirements, enacting year-long recruitment strategies, and raising the status of the organization on campus.

While at the Keystone Recognition Banquet on the evening of February 7, which featured a "State of the Fraternity" address by General Secretary Charlie Warner, Lynchburg '87, the JCU colony received special recognition through the Northeast Leadership Development Award and the Northeast Outstanding Regional Beta Volunteer Award.

The Northeast Leadership Development Award recognizes the chapter or colony with the highest participation in leadership experiences, improvement over the previous year and diversity of experiences attended. JCU had 46% participation in a leadership development program in 2008, including seven men to The Wooden Institute. The colony ensures that its members not only learn leadership skills, but they also strive to apply their knowledge. JCU was also presented with the Charles Henry Hardin Leadership Development Award at the 2008 General Convention.

The Northeast Outstanding Regional Beta Volunteer Award is one of only a handful of individual honors. As a chapter counselor, this special brother communicates with the colony multiple times per day and attends every colony meeting. The members treat him like a father, even calling him on Fathers' Day. He sets expectations of advisors, all of which are being met. As one who was initiated later in life, he attended Convention in 2008 to learn more about the Ritual and help the colony improve its performance. He knows every member and understands their motivations, hot buttons, aspirations, etc. His heart and passion make him very deserving of this award. Congratulations to JCU's Ric Eickhoff!

After a jam-packed weekend, which even included a side trip to nearby Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, the attendees are ready to lead the colony to a successful and productive year!
