DALLAS, TX -- Dr. Scott J. Allen, Visiting Assistant Professor of Management at John Carroll University and the faculty advisor for JCU's Colony, has been elected by the delegates to the 169th General Convention to serve a three year term as a Vice President on the Board of Trustees of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
Allen, initiated into the Beta Pi chapter at the University of Minnesota on January 13, 1991, has been extraordinarily active in the organization during and since his graduation in 1995. While an undergraduate member, he served as Ritual Chair, Risk Manager, Secretary, Vice President, and President of his chapter. Allen explained that he originally joined Beta because he was “looking for a way to make the University of Minnesota a smaller place.” He continued, “I did not think going Greek would be for me. After meeting some of the brothers…I determined that this may be a great opportunity.”
Continuing his passion for the Fraternity, Allen began working at the Administrative Office in Oxford, OH when he accepted a position in 1997 as a Chapter Management Consultant, and then became the Director of Chapter Operations from 1997-2000. From 2000-2003, he served as the second Director of the Men of Principle Initiative (MPI), charged with developing programs to support its mission, vision, and nine goals.
After he departed the Administrative Office, he took on the volunteer role of Chief of District Eight and Chapter Counselor for the Lambda Kappa-Beta chapter of Beta Theta Pi at Case Western Reserve University. He held both of these positions from 2004-2008. He has served as faculty advisor for the JCU Colony since October 2007 and will continue to do so as he begins his tenure on the Board of Trustees.
Allen talks a little about what he has gained through the Beta experience. “I worked at the [Administrative Office (A/O)] and many of my best friends are former A/O staff members. I met my wife Jessica. I have traveled to more than 120 campuses throughout North America. My current business partner is another connection through Beta Theta Pi. In addition, it was through Beta that I found my passion for the study of leadership. This organization has fundamentally transformed who I am as a person.”
Earning his Ph.D. in Leadership and Change from Antioch University, Scott Allen is quickly becoming an authority on all things leadership. He has published numerous articles and books, including Emotionally Intelligent Leadership: A Guide for College Students (with co-author Marcy L. Shankman), which was the subject of the cover article for the Summer 2008 issue of The Beta Theta Pi. In addition to writing and speaking, Allen also facilitates workshops and leads retreats across a wide variety of industries, and in 2005 founded the Center for Leader Development. He became a full-time visiting assistant professor at John Carroll University in the fall of 2006 and was voted the favorite teacher in the Boler School of Business in 2008. Allen now lives in Cleveland Heights, Ohio with his wife, Jessica, and son, Will.
