Leadership Development
In order to facilitate building Men of Principle for a principled life, Beta Theta Pi is the envy of the Greek world in terms of its offerings of leadership development opportunities. These wonderful programs help our men become responsible leaders, one of the ideals of the Fraternity's mission. Beta Theta Pi is dedicated to developing leaders of integrity who enable positive action, accountability, and personal development among members of their chapters, Greek communities, and the General Fraternity.
Many of these opportunities are subsidized in whole or in part by the Beta Theta Pi Foundation or the colony's operating budget. In 2008, John Carroll sent 14 men to one or more of the following experiences, and was honored with both the Charles Henry Hardin Leadership Development Award and the Northeast Leadership Development Award for our commitment to participation. In 2009, we had 13 different men attend one of these experiences, and again earned the Hardin Award.
The Wooden Institute for Men of PrincipleThe John and Nellie Wooden Institute for Men of Principle is a five-day values-based leadership experience that has garnered international attention and recognition from the Greek community. It continues to be the hallmark education program of the Fraternity. The Wooden Institute participants are divided into small, 10-man "chapters" for the week. Their main goal is to explore their own principles and those of Beta Theta Pi.
Leadership CollegeThe Peter F. Greiner Leadership College provides leadership training and education for up-and-coming leaders of Beta chapters and colonies. Conducted during the Fraternity's General Convention, strong emphasis is placed on team building, motivation, personal values, leading with integrity and the importance of collaboration.
Chapter Presidents Leadership Academy The Miller Nichols Chapter Presidents Leadership Academy (CPLA) provides an opportunity for all chapter and colony presidents to visit the Fraternity's founding site in Oxford, OH. This program concentrates on personal and chapter leadership, providing an intense three day agenda where presidents learn to become more effective leaders, develop personal officer goals, design a framework for chapter success, and network with other presidents.
Keystone Regional Leadership ConferenceKeystone Regional Leadership Conference is a high quality, regional education experience focusing on chapter operations, officer development, principled leadership, and volunteer training. During Keystone, chapter officers attend individual officer tracks, learn how to lead their chapters, and set goals with the executive team.
Undergraduate Interfraternity InstituteThe Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI), hosted by the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), is a five-day coeducational experience that focuses on personal and chapter values, leadership development, team building, and the art of building community. This values-oriented institute is designed to develop momementum toward positive changes throughout the entire Greek community.
Betas at John Carroll also take part in leadership experiences available on campus, such as the Emerging Leader Program. We also have a number of our brothers involved in leadership positions across campus, as resident assistants, orientation staff leaders, organization officers, and many more. In addition, the Colony tries to incorporate brief exercises or activities to further develop personal and professional leadership skills into its meetings and brotherhood events.
