Commitment to Community

One of the pinnacle ideals of Beta Theta Pi's "Men of Principle" Initiative is its commitment to community, either through service or philanthropic efforts. The strong emphasis on service is a primary reason why many men chose to join the fraternity at John Carroll.

The fraternity seeks to take part in already-established service opportunities on campus, such as Through the Eyes of a Child each December, Project HOPE each April, or the Labre Project each and every Friday night. Additionally, brothers participate in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, to date raising more than $2,000 in the fight against cancer. Betas also are known for taking on positions on the Relay Leadership Team and many act as volunteers at fundraisers throughout the year or with set-up and take-down during the actual event.

Beta also takes part annually in northeastern Ohio's largest blood drive hosted by the American Red Cross. Held at nearby Landerhaven, we have nearly a 100% volunteerism rate over the past two years, greeting blood donors and assisting the Red Cross staff with assorted duties. Some brothers even roll up their sleeves to donate themselves. The American Red Cross honored Beta Theta Pi with an award in 2009 in recognition of our service.

This past spring, the colony developed a relationship with the East Cleveland Adult Activities Center. For three Thursdays in late March and early April, adults with mental and developmental disabilities came to campus so our men could help them to learn the game of kickball. Certainly a great learning experience for all parties involved, there even was a short "graduation" ceremony at the conclusion of the last instructional session.

Brothers have also volunteered their time raking leaves at the Carmelite Monastery, improving the grounds at St. Francis Elementary School, and moving furniture as part of the Interfaith Hospitality Network. This year, we hope to engage in even more service, expanding our breadth of opportunities offered as well as continuing to develop lasting relationships with service agencies. If you have an idea for service, or are a service agency looking to develop a partnership with Beta Theta Pi, please contact one of our service co-chairmen, Nick Skiviat or Brian Pestotnik.
